Tessin. Monte Tamaro. The chapel Santa Maria Degli Angeli was consecrated in September 1996 by the Bishop of Lugano. Built by the Swiss architect Mario BOTTA on the personal initiative of a local selfmade man, Egidio CATTANEO, the chapel represents a major innovation in the design of religious buildings. Built in porphyry, it is situated at an altitude of 1500 meters on the edge of a steep slope, a position which allows an extraordinary panoramic view. Enzo CUCCHI’S decoration of the chapel occupies the two main spaces : the ceiling of the walkway, where a tall cypress is depicted, and the centre of the chapel.

With a lift shaft at its edge, it provided access to the gantries from which the roof panels were affixed, and for the installation of the ventilation system which replaces the air within the Dome every hour. 27 March 1998.
